Kevin M. Toliver “Pirate Pride” Award Background: The Pittsburg High School Alumni Class of 1987 establishes the “Kevin M. Toliver Pirate Pride” award, a memorial scholarship and spirit award to commemorate our beloved classmate’s life and his unique pride that he personified for his hometown of Pittsburg, California and deep adoration for his high school alma mater. Kevin Maurice Toliver, who brought so much meaning to what being a “pirate” is all about, was a prominent figure throughout Kevin died on July 30, 2006 from a fire accident in his home in This 2007 year will mark the inaugural offering of one scholarship in the amount of $500 (and we hope to increase this amount as contributions are made over time), to honor a graduating senior from the Class of 2007, which marks our 20th High School Reunion, in which Kevin played an active role in the planning. The “Toliver Pirate Pride” Award will be honored annually at the Pittsburg High School Scholarship Banquet by a committee comprised of Toliver family members and members of the Pittsburg High School Class of 1987. Applicants will be reviewed by the committee and awarded at the banquet each year. Qualifications for Recipient: This award shall be given to the outstanding graduating senior who exemplifies the qualities that Kevin Toliver possessed as a spirited, involved, and engaged student. It shall be given to a student whose pride and energy for Pittsburg High School goes unmatched, who works collaboratively with the staff and faculty, and who is highly involved in the fabric of student life not just as a leader, but as an active participant in student clubs, organizations, and activities. He or she must have aspirations to pursue the Armed Forces (as Kevin did), a vocational field, community college, or a 4-year university immediately after graduation.
